Installing ArcReader Using Clinton County Data with ArcReader
Getting a Template File Update your Data
What's New in ArcReader Learning ArcReader

Installing ArcReader:

ArcReader is a free, easy to use mapping application from ESRI that allows users to view GIS data, and can be download at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/. This is a large file to download, weighing in at about 200 MB. If you would like to avoid the time it takes to download, please send us an e-mail at merrittjoe@hotmail.com and we can make up a CD with the installation file for $5.00.  ESRI also offers a fantastic tutorial on using ArcReader which is a must-read for anyone that wants to use the application.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using Clinton County Data in ArcReader:

1.   Create a folder on your computer called ArcReader. Any data you download, including the template files you need, must all go into this folder. If the data & template files are not copied into the ArcReader folder you just created this application will not work.

2.   Go to the Data Downloads page and download the datasets you are interested in; anything in BLUE is part of the ArcReader Template Files and is usable with ArcReader. If you don't download ALL of the datasets in blue, you can use just the data you want in ArcReader, you'll just get a message that pops up and looks like THIS.

Remember, everything must go into the ArcReader folder, with NO SUB-FOLDERS.

NOTE:    The photography used in the template files are simply to large to make available for download on this web page; please e-mail us at merrittjoe@hotmail.com and we will make a set of DVD's or CD's  that you can purchase for $10.00 or $5.00 a piece, which you can pick up in the Map Office or in the GIS Department in the Clinton County Courthouse.

Getting a Template File

3.   You should have 1 folder called ArcReader. Now, you must download the ArcReader Template File(s) found below. If you only have a printer that can print 8.5 x 11 inches, then you can just download the 8.5x11 template.

This is important:

Decompress the Template Files into your ArcReader folder, so that they are in the same folder as the data you download.

The ArcReader Template Files have an extension pmf. A PMF file is short for Published Map File. ArcReader is a free GIS data viewer, and is therefore somewhat limited in it's ability to print to scale on different sized paper, so, we have developed 3 PMF files named ArcReaderTemplate8x11, ArcReaderTemplate11x17, and ArcReaderTemplate22x34, to print to different sized paper. Most people have printers that can print 8x11 to 11x17, so these two files will probably be the most often used.

It might be a good idea to create a shortcut to the template you most often use and put that shortcut onto your desktop, for quick and easy access.

To use our data with ArcReader, just double-click on one of the template files. You should be rewarded with a view of our entire county that looks like this after double-clicking on a pmf file.

Please note that these template files will ONLY work with ArcReader 9.3.

Update Your Data!

To make updates to any of this data, go to the Data Downloads page and download the data you want to update.

Be sure to delete the old data in the ArcReader folder first, then decompress the new data into the ArcReader folder. As long as the file names remain the same, ArcReader will automatically pick up and start using the new data.

What's New in ArcReader

05-18-09:

A NEW way to find addresses is coming...

....it is from the LBRS project data.

We've just added Clinton County Sewer District data in the format of a GeoDatabase...

...above is a sample map from ArcReader showing some of the data. You can download this data from our DOWNLOADS section.

One more bit of news...there is an UPGRADE to ArcReader, we are now up to version 9.3.1.

Click HERE to download and install this newest version.

Screenshots of New Items from 02-12-09 Template Updates:

Shows just the grid outline used in delivering the DWG Contour Data

Shows a screenshot of an  "Identify" done on one of the grid tiles. Users can, after doing an identify, click on the HypLink field and download that particular file.

As illustrated in the image above, you can highlight or draw shapes on the map and save them for review later.

NEW Aerial Photography (2008)  :

With the new template files and the Aerial Photography datasets, users can now view Aerial Photography from the years 2000, 2005, and 2008.

Please note the Aerial Photography selections in the (lower left) Table of Contents, in the image below:

In the screenshot below, you can see a few changes to the Table of Contents (on the left of the image).

Some of these screenshots shown below are from previous versions of ArcReader; nevertheless, those features illustrated are still available in ArcReader 9.3.

The above is a sample map, exported from ArcReader itself into a .bmp file and converted to a .jpg.

Some of the features in ArcReader include:

  1. The ability to highlight areas of your map by drawing free-hand.
  2. The ability to search for x-y coordinates, including latitude-longitude in Degrees Minutes Seconds or Decimal Minutes, among others.
  3. Search for an address in the find function. This is currently looking at an address index that is online with ESRI, so the address you find might be a bit off. The GIS Department will be adding an index specifically for Clinton County address searching very soon.
  4. The ability to change you map title for printing.
  5. The  inclusion of  a magnifier tool that will enable users to see a zoomed-in area of there map without changing the entire map display.
  6. One feature that is really interesting is the swipe tool. If you have multiple years worth of our Aerial Photography you can display one over top of the other and use this tool to "swipe" one away to see what's underneath. Look at this screenshot. The East part of the image is black and white photography from the year 2000, the Western part of the image is from 2005 color photography.

This (above) is another example of using the Swipe tool, Old photography on the RIGHT new photography on the LEFT.
